A soldier trained from birth is deemed obsolete and dumped on a waste planet where he is reluctantly taken in by a community of defenseless, stranded wayfarers.
In a futuristic society, some people are selected at birth to become soldiers, and trained in such a manner that they become inhuman killing machines. One of the most succesfull and older of these soldiers (Russell) is pitted against a new breed of soldiers, and after the confrontation is believed to be dead. His body is left behind in a semi-abandoned colonial planet, where everything is peaceful, and he is taught about the other aspects of life. But eventually he has to fight the new breed of soldiers again, this time to defend his new home…
Some people realy hated this film, but what were you looking for. This isn't Titanic folks, it's a pure action spectacular. And as that it does its job well. The special effects are great, the action is fast, and the violence is brutal. What more could you ask for. I got everything I expected from this film, and an interesting main character to boot. This is a character i'd like to see developed further. He gained a little humanity in the end and i'd like to see what happens next. It may be simmilar to Terminator 2, but T2 was a great action film. All in all a good film that does what it's supposed to.
This much-maligned mega-flop riffs on so many films, it's no surprise to see that the director is Paul WS Anderson, a director who can provide strong visuals, but never anything truly original. Here we can see aspects lifted from Universal Soldier, Terminator, Rambo, Mad Max 2, etc. Some see this as being set in the same universe as Blade Runner due to reference to 'Battle of Tannhauser Gate', and it comes from the same scriptwriter, David Webb Peoples. That said, there are also references to 'Nibian Moons', 'Antares Malestrom', and 'Perdition's Flames', which should strike a chord with Trekkies.

Kurt Russell probably utters a total of 4 lines in the whole movie, but he is excellent as 'Todd', a man who has been bred to be the ultimate soldier, and now finds himself discarded, alone, knowing nothing else than soldiering. When he falls in with a group of survivors of a crashed ship on the garbage dumping planet he winds up on, a strong whiff of Shane comes into the picture.

Predictably, the super-genetic soldiers that have replaced Todd and his men arrive for some target practice, and the film finally delivers some epic action thrills. Though it must be said, by the time things are over, there's hardly anyone left to save…

It was never going to win any plaudits, but if you're in an angry mood, it's the perfect outlet.

Soldier is a violent science fiction action film starring Kurt Russell as Sargeant Todd, an cold hardened space marine, whom was chosen at birth to be a soldier, whom is dumped and left to die on Arcadia 234, a garbage planet, when he is knocked unconscious in a fight with Caine 607 (Jason Scott Lee), a genetically engineered new breed of soldier. On the planet, Todd is befriend and nursed back to health by the survivors of a crashed spaceship, that have set up a colony on the planet and Todd struggles to adjust to living a normal life, due to his conditioning and training as a soldier. But, when Colonel Meckham (Jason Issacs), Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldier's commanding officer orders Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldiers to eliminate the crash survivors, as part of an training routine. Todd uses his combat skills and decides to protect the crash survivors and takes on the genetic engineered soldiers in a one man war. As an aside, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has stated that as far as he is concerned, his film Soldier is a 'sidequel' to Blade Runner, as it occurs in the same fictional milieu as Scott's film, although it is not actually a follow-up (Soldier was co-scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Peoples).

Reference- One of the battle names tattooed on Todd's arm.
